Pity Versus Compassion

Pity is condescending, speaks of superiority (“I can’t imagine ever letting myself get like that.” And may well ascribe blame on the victim (without seeing other factors)

Compassion I suppose is the overlap of “there but for the grace of god go I” awareness of how someone can get their feet tangled in a chain of events.

Compassion presumably leads to action… (well, you’d hope…), because it can quickly become a badge of sensitivity (“Oh, gosh, I’m so nice, so compassionate”).
