Irony versus Sarcasm

So you need a sense of irony, not the sarcasm that masquerades as intelligent distance – the fatalists’ smirk, the brainless, all-corrosive knowing derision alleged to have gone out of fashion on September 11 – but the dark recognition that in history, as in love, you can’t always get what you want.
