Brains are delicate things…

Bravado versus Courage

Bravado is not the same thing as courage. Deeds of courage are committed by people who act consciously on principle or respond actively to a situation with the knowledge that the risks they take- of limb, psychic safety or life- do not serve their immediate self-interest. Courageous people know that life under the bed is safe but slimey. But bravado is grounded in ignorance or stupidity- the act of a person who, say, jumps into a bullring believing that what he will meet there will be chicken, or that bulls are gentle, sensible creatures that will respond positively to kindness and reason.
