Brains are delicate things…
Cars offer the illusion of personal mobility – you can go where you like, when you like. But if you discount all the time people work to make the money to pay for the car, MOTs, repairs, petrol, parking etc. then their speed per hour is no often no better than that of cyclists!
Also, the individual mobility of the car driver means very much less mobility for children, who are too scared/sensible to cross busy roads. The UK’s road fatality statistics, while pretty good for adults, are terrible for children. Blair promised to sort this, but backed down because he is a spineless moron, and because he was allowed to by our apathy and stupidity.
And let’s not even talk about the effect of cars on communities! (See John Adams on Hypermobility)
