Custom versus Tradition

Customs are organic, non-commercial, usually arising from below. Traditions are what’s invented and imposed through national curricula, the Church etc., often by leaders interested in nation- building and securing their position. The classic example is the late 19th century pomp around the British Royal Family. (This is not to say that customs are all nice because they are “natural”, or that all Traditions are evil and nasty.) See Hobsbawm and Ranger.
