Brains are delicate things…
Another brilliant lie. Our needs are usually fairly basic- food, shelter, clothing, meaningful work, love and (self-)respect. (sometimes these clash- e.g. people going on hunger strike).
Our wants are endless, especially when encouraged by very sophisticated marketing techniques. Capitalism destroys our independence- e.g. trashing public transport systems so people do indeed need cars ( ‘needs’ do change over time, usually because the lifeworld is being endocolonised (sorry about that, couldn’t help myself. Habermas meets Virilio- brrrrrrr)
But by saying needs equals wants, they can turn vital services, like care of the elderly, into just another “preference” that will be dealt with by the market, rather than the basis of a decent society.
