Disease versus Illness

Disease refers to the physiological problem- be it a virus, a fracture, a bacterial infection. Any living organism can be diseased. Illness refers to the ‘social’ and psychological consequences of the disease. So only self-aware creatures (basically big mammals) can have illness. Useful for thinking about disability.
