Community: Gemeinschaft and Gesellshaft
In categorizing societies Toennies compared Gemeinschaft: pre-industrial, rural village communities– where everyone else knew each other intimately– with Gesellschaft, an urban mechanical society in which people only knew each other in non-personal, professional terms.
